Baby Talk Wednesday: Necessary Baby Gear?

6 Jun

Don’t worry, I’m not going to actually write the post in baby talk…I want to talk about baby stuff.  We’re starting to research all kinds of the big (and little) things that babies need — strollers, baby monitors, breast pumps, diaper bags, etc.  I’m not big on extra clutter or getting everything and the kitchen sink for the bambino, but I know we need the essentials…which brings me to my baby talk question of the month…

So moms — new and seasoned — what are/were your top 3 baby “must haves”?  If you aren’t a mom yet, what are the 3 coolest baby things you’ve seen?

Please help us out because mostly, we feel like this…. :-)

And yes, this was taken the day we found out.  I felt just like Steve on the inside…

Yay! So happy to be talking about baby stuff with you : )

    My 3 must haves:
    1) City Mini stroller – I couldn’t love this thing more. It folds up with one hand and is super light. Handles like a breeze too.

    2) Moby wrap (or Baby Bjorn) – the girls slept in the wrap while I was working and since I was working from home it was a major bonus. Some babies don’t like to be wrapped though so it’s hit or miss. Plus you look a little strange putting it on – I recommend wrapping before leaving the house : )

    3) Dr. Brown’s bottles – both girls loved these bottles. They were never fussy after feeding and I use the tiny cleaning brushes that came with them to clean out all the little crevices in their sippy cups to this day.

How would you rate the Moby wrap for someone who is maybe not coordinated….I really like it, but I’m concerned with trying to get it all wrapped up and then have it actually hold to keep the baby in, I mean, you know me… :-)

I have WAY more than three, but here it goes….

    1. White cloth diapers (I use them for everything but diapers!) They are so handy and we went through several everyday, especially if breastfeeding! They are easy to wash and can be bleached if necessary! Nice as a quick burp rag.
    2. A nice chair in the baby’s room. Something that rocks and something that you can put your feet up. Be careful if buying a recliner because little hands can get caught. We got a comfy chair and ottoman. You will live in this thing, so don’t go cheap, go comfy (something you can lay your head back and rest too!)
    3. A good breast pump (double pump with a hands-free bra!) This is only if you are breastfeeding of course. We have a Medela and love it!

Are you doing cloth or disposable diapers?

By the way, I love Amanda’s comments. I would agree with her on #2 & 3. I don’t have the stroller, so I can’t comment on that one! Good luck!

I have more comments if you care to hear them…hahahaha!

Thanks Jamie!! I am looking for any and all suggestions as we have no idea what we’re doing… :-) If you have more, send ‘em my way! Hope all is well down there, I ask Steve daily if he’s gotten any texts… haha

Matt said his big thing is to buy a video monitor. We didn’t think we needed it, so we bought a regular “sound” baby monitor. A few months after Claire’s birth we ended up going out and buying a video monitor. We have used the heck out of it, especially now that she is a toddler & we can see her in her big girl bed. I rate a video monitor a 10 out of 10 in regards to importance!

    Hi Elizabeth!!
Totally agree with the video monitor:) and the white cloth diapers!
    1) Oxyclean and a soak bucket, breast poop stains! I would rinse Natalies blow out clothes and then let them soak a few hours before washing, worked wonders.
    2) Definitely, a comfy chair and a boppy for breast feeding.. Also, a good breast feeding cover is worth it, I have a “hooter hider” and I really like it.
    3) For sure some kind of wrap or carrier, I had a moby and liked it-It does take some time getting used to getting into it. I got a Baby Katan and a Ring Sling for the new baby I will let you know how I like them. Both are less complicated
    4) Some kind of sound machine, Natalie still listens to her “sounds” we have ocean waves on repeat on a old MP3 player. Really helps the newborn adjust and helps them stay asleep longer:)
Ahh man Natalie’s up from nap, I could go on and on! Would be happy to go with you to register:)

I have so many things that I would recommend that its hard to list. I would just say. -Whatever the gender make sure you buy clothes bigger then infant. They grow fast and you will be surprised when you need a bigger size. That goes for diapers too.
-I loved having a scent blanket. Its a small blanket, shirt. That you sleep with to absorb your scent and then when you need to leave the baby with dad or grandparents the little one will know your near when in a bad mood. Especially at nap time.
-This Booster was nice to have instead of a high chair. Space saver and easy to take with you. http://www.toysrus.com/graphics/product_images/pTRU1-2876922reg.jpg * and they can grow with it too.
-When registering I would request two car seats. It makes it easier then having to switch the car seats around all the time. Or look for one on Craigslist and just have the seat cover dry cleaned. Cheaper on the wallet too. Just make sure its up to code.
    -Noise maker for sure!!
    -And a swing!
-Oh a bottle warmer was always useful. Lot quicker then boiling water.
-Carter, gymboree are accurate on their sizes where as Gap is a little smaller then the size.
Hoped this help. Sorry to overwhelm you with ideas. Congrats!!!!

I know you have seen my list, but here is the link anyway: First Year Baby Gear

I agree with almost all things listed in the comments above! And you can totally figure out the Moby wrap, it is SO daunting when you first see how long that piece of fabric is, but it’s a snap to get on after you do it a couple times.

I think I pull up your baby list near daily… :-)

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the Moby, they look so comfy when I see people with them, so I think I’ll give it a whirl. I know you were talking about it awhile back, did you ever get an Ergo?
