Tales of a New Homeowner- Part 4

30 Jan

This goes in the “duh” category….last night we were making some soup for dinner and spilled a little in that annoying crack between the stove and the counter.  I wiped my rag down there and then decided to wiggle the stove out and clean it up for good.  Clue #1 that this would be super gross…the stove was so stuck the floor Steve and I both had to pull on it pretty hard to get it out of the spot.  Clue #2 stuff started rolling around under the oven.

Once it was out, it was grosser than I imagined it could possible be….popcorn, cat (or maybe small dog) food, bouncy balls, a small puppy, peas, a lot of icky spills.

Mini Shop Vac and Magic Erasers to the rescue!  We discussed how we can’t believe we didn’t think to clean back here soon, I mean everything else has been a huge mess, why wouldn’t we think to sanitize behind the stove.  This begs the question — when you move into a new to you house, do you clean behind the stove or leave it left unseen?  Are we the only people that didn’t think to do this?!?!? ick. ick. ick.

Valentine’s Day Lite

27 Jan

You all know my policy by know of pre-holiday decorations purchases…however…I’ve been doing a really bad job of going after the holidays to score some clearance deals.  I was at Hob Lob this week with my sister and I could not resist picking up a few pink valentine’s decorations in anticipation.

First up —  A pink glitter heart.  I debated for a long time about this because I knew I could easily make it myself, but ultimately the “you COULD make it, but WILL you before Valentine’s day?”  The answer was no, so I spent $5.00 instead, came home and hung it on my door.  I love it so much I might just leave it up year round.

Sorry the picture is so dark…it’s absolutely never daylight here during weekday “home” hours.

Random Valentine’s Day purchase #2 — I could NOT resist a metallic hot pink frog wearing a little crown.  I am a little obsessed with him.  He’ll probably be on display year round.

He’s just hanging out on the kitchen counter for now, but I think he’ll hang out on the mantle where I can wink at him every day…you know, if I could wink.

Anyone else buy a few fantastic pink items and call it good for your Valentine’s Day decorating??  Have you been to Hob Lob to see their fantastic Valentine’s display?  I highly recommend it :-)

Easy peasy organization

25 Jan

I had a lot of goals for January, we’re probably not going to get them all done, but I’m proud of the progress we’ve made.  A big goal of ours?  Get some organization down in this kitchen.  Our house is big, there are 2 of us, and we have a TON of storage, so why are we always a mess?  Because all that space has no organizational properties.  I started small and tackled our “junk” cupboard.  It catches EVERYTHING (especially those things you need somewhere to shove quick when company comes over).

Why did I neglect to take a before picture…sigh.  This is the cupboard in contention.

Our biggest organization challenge?  Paper!  We get all our bills electronically, so aside from birth announcements, magazines and wedding invites, our mailbox fills with a lot of JUNK.  I don’t like to just throw full credit card announcements in the recycling for anyone to grab, so we would make a pile and cart it upstairs to the office to shred occasionally.  I had a thought this weekend, why not save a step and put the shredder under the desk and shred things instantly.  So I brought the shredder down and it was a success…except that the cord covered the drawer to reach the outlet.  45 minutes later, we had an outlet (yep, Steve was feeling inspired and got that puppy rigged right up).

Success.  Next up, I had to tackle that drawer.  It was full of everything random that we didn’t know where to put.  A quick trip to Target and I found the perfect slim organizers for the drawer (it’s only 1.75″ deep)

The thing I love the most — empty compartments and space!

Finally, I tackled the cupboard, this was my favorite because with the assistance of the shredder, I emptied it!

Cookie cutters, magazines, and…wait, what is the photo album doing in there Elizabeth?  Glad you asked.

I had a spare photo album laying around and I had an abundance of paint samples that I wanted to keep (since we clearly have a lot of rooms to go), so a few minutes of work and now I have a nice, organized paint book.  I recycled all of the colors that don’t go with our existing color plans and badda bing, badda boom.  No more paint chips all over the cupboard.

And that, my friends, is a quick and dirty organization of the junk cupboard.  Anyone else organizing in the new year?  Any fun tips you follow? I’m new to the complete home organization game, so I’d love to hear what you are working with!

Steamy.

16 Jan

Thought I’d pop in with a quick update…We had another productive weekend over here..updates to come, but in my quest to vinyl EVERYTHING, I decided our shower needed a little sass.

I had seen some bathroom decals, most were cute but not really us…as I was playing with my Silhouette last night, I decided that our shower was Steamy.

It makes me smile and mid bathroom painting…I needed a smile.  We also paint the trim and vanity which you can see happening in the background and we have the last coat drying as a type so bathroom update coming soon.  We’re completely in love with it, it look so much bigger!

Our Favorite Things: Pink Toolbelt Edition

11 Jan

Yes folks, you read that right.  My parents gave me a pink toolbelt for Christmas and I could NOT be more excited!!!  Since embarking on our front of house redo this summer, I discovered that really do need a good toolbelt.  I’d have to try to hold assorted tools in my hands while climbing the later or stick them in my back pocket only to have them fall 2 stories and wait on the ground for me to come retrieve them.  I’m excited to have my very own tool belt (and now I always know where my tools are!  It drives me crazy when I can’t find my hammer or tape measure…and yes, we have his and hers tools…I prefer mine to be hers only since the mister has a tendency to never put tools back QUITE where he found them.  So you could say the toolbelt is multipurpose for both tools and marital sanity.  Don’t worry, I’m not going to refer to it as my marital sanity belt, because that would be weird.  Digress much Elizabeth?  Back to the task at hand…

Feast your eyes on this!

I’ve found it to be quite handy (though the hammer loop leaves a bit to be desired) and I’m ready to get to work!  I do like that it’s nylon instead of pink leather, I’ve seen reviews that the pink the leather can sometimes bleed on to your clothes, which is clearly not a feature I’m seeking.

If you are searching for a pink toolbelt of your very own, my parents got this one via amazon.  All in all, highly recommend!!

Then, to add to my love of new tools, I won something very exciting at work today (yes, at work).  What you ask?  A Retract-A-Bit  screwdriver!  It has 6 bits in one screwdriver that you can change out the bit like one of those ink switching pens from when you were little.  I couldn’t seem to locate a link to such awesomeness (except for an awesome pink version here, notes for work tomorrow — suggest we begin giving away pink tools for prizes).

I love this thing.  It now lives in my toolbelt…but don’t tell Steve, he’s on the hunt for it :-)

If you need me, my tools and I will be off fixing…something…

Anyone else get some handy presents for Christmas??  I’m always looking for new tool ideas!

Sayonara Brown Walls

9 Jan

Thought I’d pop in to give you a quick status update on Unfinished Project Intervention (and keep us accountable!).  We got the subfloor in this weekend and now the entire bathroom is level.  It’s one of those things that surprises you how much of a different it makes, but it unified our entire room so now the toilet room to the main portion of the bathroom is level… AND we painted.  In addition to our “finish projects” month, we’ve also decided that for the month of January, we’re only going to buy groceries and gas.  That means if we’re doing a project, it better be with stuff on hand.  We bought some gray paint last month with the intent to paint the office, that turned into quite the project (per usual), so we abandoned it and decided to use the paint on the bathroom instead.

Getting ready to rid the bathroom of that AWFUL brown color.

Action shot (and last remaining patch of brown).  It took me forever to trim in the bathroom, so Steve took on the photographer job to occupy his time while he waited for me to get done trimming so he could roll.  For paint, we chose “Secret Passage” from Olympic (D58-2).  It reads a little more blue than it looks in real life, I don’t know if we love it “foreva’ eva’”, but for now, it’s 100% better than poop brown.

As a reminder, here’s what we were working with.

And here is where we are now!

I think even the new layer of subfloor is helping give the room a little summin’ summin’.

Admittedly awful lighting, it’s a grayish blue and we’re hoping to love even more once the vanity and trim goes to white as well.  We’re going to get 2 light fixtures, one for each side of the sink, and frame out the mirror a bit to make it less “here is a wall with a large mirror”.  We also have someday plans to make a concrete counter top in here with 2 low profile vessel sinks…but all in good time.  For now, I’m amazed at home much bigger our bathroom feels.

This week we’re going to get the floor primed and ready to lay the tile, paint the doors, and paint out the trim…Hopefully we’ll be in a spot this coming weekend to get the toilet back in and FINALLY move fully into our master bathroom.  As usual with these projects, I can’t believe it took us so long to finally paint.  We still have quite a few rooms left to paint (the Husker room, the yellow room, the main bathroom, the office, our master bedroom, the dining room, and the laundry room…plus some DryLock in the basement), but getting one done and remembering how good it feels gives us motivation to get crackin’ on the other paint jobs so this house can finally feel like us!

Anybody else paint over the weekend?  Take a room from poop brown to any other color in the world BUT poop brown?  I’d love to see it!

Our Favorite Things: The Shop Vac (part 2)

8 Jan

For Christmas this year we got an AWESOME gift from my sister and her fiance…a mini Craftsman shop vac!  It’s 2.5 gallons and super handy for those quick clean-ups.  You can easily carry it anywhere and it fits through the door without worrying about banging up the door frame.  We still love our full size version, but until we owned a mini, we had no idea how big of a pain the full size guy was to use in the house.

Steve used it earlier to vacuum off the fan…and yes, that IS an air compressor in our bedroom…

We also used it to empty the remaining water from the toilet bowl so we could remove the toilet to replace the wax seal (and yes, we’re also replacing that gross toilet seat because believe it or not, I cleaned it right before this photo).

The events portrayed in this photo are based on real events.  Dramatization and re-inactment done for blogging purposes.  :-)

If you are looking for a good “welcome to home ownership” gift or maybe an upcoming handy person birthday gift, we highly recommend the Craftsman Shop Vac.  I just realized this is the 3rd post I have written about a vacuum so some sort since I started this blog…can you tell I hate to sweep?!!!?

And if you were wondering, I’m nerdy enough to blather on about a Shop Vac completely un-sponsored, so this is definitely not a perked post.

Anybody else get any fun (or fun nerdy) gifts for Christmas?  Wagers on how many more posts I can possibly write about vacuums (or vacuum products)?

Happy Sunday!

Unfinished Project Intervention

5 Jan

You’ve probably noticed that I’ve mentioned “unfinished project month” more than once in recent posts…Steve and I decided that we’d start off January getting our hineys back in gear and finishing some loose ends around here.  First up for an intervention, the master bathroom.  We’ve neglected that room for almost a year, so no more neglect, we are making that room livable usable space!

Current State:

First thing’s first, we’re going to FINALLY do something about the sub-floor.  We’re adding another layer of sub-floor on top of it because the floor was uneven.  Steve is actually tackling that as I type…it sounds like the ceiling is falling down (as a side note).  Once the floor is good to go, we’re going to prime it and add some stick tile linoleum we picked up a long long time ago for 30 cents a tile.

Painting is also on the list since someone painted these walls poo brown.

We’re also going to paint the vanity, because it’s looking worse for the wear (as you can see).  We’re going to frame out the mirror to make it thicker and put in an extra vanity light so we have some better lighting in this room.  We’ll also paint the doors and trim white.  I’m so excited just thinking about it…too bad we can’t work on it 24/7 until it’s done!

Next in the unfinished files….that dreaded dining room.  We won’t get it all done this month, but we’re going to get that wall paper down finally and mud/tape the fresh drywall.  My awesome chandelier needs a better background…

Finally, the “smaller projects”…

These have my name and my name only written on them….let’s play “I spy” shall we?  I spy with my little eye…a chair in disrepair (waiting to be reupholstered), a table that’s seen better days (I started sanding, but haven’t gotten much further), a lamp needing spray paint, a $10 craigslist dresser begging for a facelift, a door that needs a coat of white paint, and tons of stuff to organize on my new shelves.

PHEW.  26 more days, we better get on it!  Is anyone else feeling the freshness of a new year?  Does your project corner look as bad as mine?!?!

Hoarders — Landscape edition

4 Jan

We headed to Lowe’s to get some bolts this weekend and stumbled across an awesome deal, composite landscape edging, normally $25.00 a piece on sale for $1.00.  That’s right, a buck!  We bought enough to go around our entire yard (this will be the summer of the landscaping) for $18.00 for a savings of $432.00!  Definitely our most random impulse buy, but landscape edging is always so expensive, we definitely felt it was something worth storing for the winter.

We even took a picture to capture the moment.

Color us excited.  As a bonus, we had a gift card from our credit card rewards, so $0.00 out of pocket for us.  Woo hoo!  Anybody else score a random New Year’s Day deal?  How excited do you get when you make a secret score??  We giggled the entire way home :-)  Happy Wednesday!

Mixing Up Some Mixer Art

1 Jan

I’ve been dying for more chances to use my Silhouette but we’ve unfortunately been out of town quite a bit with the holidays.  We went to my parents house this weekend to celebrate Christmas and I decided to bring to my new toy with me.  As we were browsing Pinterest, we stumbled on some vinyl mixer art.  This got the wheels turning and we headed to HobLob to pick up some white vinyl.  I download the Cooking Utensils shape for my Silhouette as well as the Spatula shape.  Some copying and pasting and I was in business!

I measured the mixer and used about 7.5″ tall and 8″ long, so using the grid in the Silhouette Studio, I made it exactly these dimensions.  Once I had the design done, I didn’t a quick test cut with cardstock and then loaded up the white vinyl.

This is the negative space once I pulled it off my template.

After I had my utensils cut out, I used transfer paper to pull them off the vinyl and make the adhering on the mixer a piece of cake.

I know there are lots of fancy tools for this, but I used the Pampered Chef scraper to transfer from the transfer paper to the mixer.

After you have made sure your vinyl is adhered, it’s time to peel it back and see the big reveal.

TaDa!  It was super easy and turned out SO cute.  My momma’s mixer has never looked better.

Did you do any crafting for the New Year??  Who else is lovin’ the vinyl on appliances trend?!?!
